A private African American history tour of Washington DC

Your own guide and driver take your group from the Navy Memorial to Cedar Hill, the MLK Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial, and leave you at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Pick it for the guide: 1,010 of 1,186 reviews give five stars, and guests keep naming the person who led them.

Private African American History Tour & Museum Entry

About this experience

USA Guided Tours runs this as a private tour: only your group rides, in an SUV or a van depending on the option you pick. It starts at 10:00 a.m. at the US Navy Memorial on Pennsylvania Avenue and works its way across the city with a guide who talks on board and walks with you at the stops. The listing names eight of them, from the African American Civil War Memorial Museum to Frederick Douglass's Cedar Hill and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial. The last one is the museum itself.

Read the price line carefully. It is from $415 per person, not per group, and the rate moves with the size of your party: on the October 7, 2026 calendar, two travelers were quoted $526.50 each for the SUV and $567 for the van. Bigger groups pay less each. The museum part is a complimentary reservation for a free timed-entry pass, given after the tour. The operator's own listing says this is not an official Smithsonian tour, that entry "is not guaranteed", and that the passes are not factored into the price. Entry to the museum is free for everyone with a timed pass from the museum.

Two caveats from guests. Stops shift with the day and the guide (one reviewer found them "a little different" from her first visit), and some are short: the Civil War Memorial Museum commentary happens outside the building. And the four hours do not include the museum. One October 2025 group lost the museum visit to the government shutdown; their guide swapped in a drive past Howard University and a soul food stop.

  • Ends at the museum with a reserved free pass for the afternoon

What guests say

★★★★★

This was our second tour with this company. [...] The stops were a little different and it felt customized for our group. [...] Our tour guide, Dre was EXCELLENT! He was very informative and responsive to our needs.

Elvis was our tour guide and he was amazing. Very knowledgeable. The tour was a little over 3 hours but it didn’t feel like a long tour. I highly recommend even for families with teenagers; everyone will learn something.

Tips before you book

  • Eat before you go in. A guest wrote that the tour time "does not include time spent in the museum" and to allow time for lunch. No food on the vehicle, snacks are fine.
  • The museum's last entry is 4:00 p.m. and it closes at 5:30. A 10 a.m. start leaves you roughly two to three hours inside. Plan a second visit if you can.
  • Want a fallback? Reserve your own free pass too. Advance passes open 30 days ahead on a rolling basis, and same-day passes go online at 8:15 a.m. ET.
  • Ask for the van option only if you need the space. The SUV was the cheaper of the two on our sample date.
  • Check the news before a federal shutdown: the museum closes with the government, and the tour cannot fix that.

Frequently asked questions

Is the private African American history tour priced per person or per group?

Per person. It is a private tour, but the from-price is $415 per person and the rate depends on how many of you book. Two travelers were quoted $526.50 each (SUV) on the October 7, 2026 calendar. Larger groups pay less each.

Does the tour guarantee entry to the National Museum of African American History and Culture?

No. The listing includes a complimentary reservation for the museum's free timed-entry pass after the tour, and says plainly that entry is not guaranteed and that this is not an official Smithsonian tour. Entry is free for everyone with a timed pass, so reserving your own as a backup costs nothing.

Where does the tour start and end?

It starts at 10:00 a.m. at US Navy Memorial Plaza, 701 Pennsylvania Ave NW, and ends at the museum, 1400 Constitution Ave NW. It does not take you back to the start, and hotel pickup is not included.

Can children join?

The listing has a single adult band for ages 12 to 99, so plan on booking ages 12 and up. Reviewers praise it for teenagers and mixed-age families. With younger children, the small-group drive has child and youth rates.
